Why You Must Visit a Care Home Before Admitting Your Parent: A Lesson Every Family Should Know

By Wan Salbiah Mior Yahya

Founder & CEO, ZACC MYTOWN (Zara Aisyah Care Centre)

Sending a parent to a care home is one of the hardest decisions any child will ever make.

I see it every day — the fear, the guilt, the uncertainty.

Families are torn between wanting the best for their loved ones and fearing they might make the wrong choice.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned after a decade running ZACC MYTOWN:

The biggest mistakes happen when families admit a parent without ever stepping foot into the facility.

Not because they don’t care — but because they are rushed, overwhelmed, or misinformed.

And when expectations are not aligned with reality, the pain can be even bigger.

This is why I always insist:

Please visit the care home first. Always. Even if it’s not ZACC MYTOWN.

Let me tell you why.

1. Personal Truth: I Built ZACC MYTOWN With My Own Family in Mind

Before I explain anything else, I want to share something personal.

When I built ZACC MYTOWN, I built it knowing that one day… my own parents, my older siblings, my uncles, aunties — even myself — might need this place.

That is why every corner, every bed, every routine, every system is designed with one question in my heart:

“If I become a patient one day, would I be comfortable being admitted into ZACC MYTOWN?”

If the answer is ever no, I fix it.

That is how this place grew —

not just from business planning,

but from a daughter’s fear,

a sister’s responsibility,

and a caregiver’s heart.

In a way, I tell my team:

“The beds we prepare today are for us too, someday.”

But for now, I let the older generation enjoy my “piece of cake” first — because they deserve the best comfort today, while we prepare for our future tomorrow.

And this is exactly why I encourage families to come and see our facility first.

Because if I myself wouldn’t sleep here,

why should your parents?

2. Every Facility Will Promise the Best — But Only a Visit Reveals the Truth

Websites are beautiful.

Brochures are polished.

Social media shows the highlight reel.

But caregiving is not about marketing.

Caregiving is about:

  • daily interactions
  • staff attitude
  • the routine
  • the cleanliness
  • the dignity of the residents
  • the energy of the home

You can only truly understand these things when you walk in and feel it yourself.

3. Your Parent’s Needs Must Match the Facility’s Capabilities

Every elderly person comes with a different condition:

  • dementia
  • mobility issues
  • complex nursing needs
  • behavioural challenges
  • stroke recovery
  • weakness
  • or just needing companionship

Not every facility is equipped for every condition.

A facility tour allows us to understand your parent better — and to tell you honestly whether we can manage their needs safely and respectfully.

Sometimes, the right answer is “Yes, we can help.”

And sometimes, it is “For this condition, another home may be more suitable.”

I believe in honesty over business.

4. Meeting the Team Builds Trust — And Trust Is Everything

When you visit:

  • you see the nurses
  • you see the caregivers
  • you see the real environment
  • you feel the energy of the home

You are not placing your parent with strangers.

You are placing them with caregivers who will become part of their daily life.

A quick visit can tell you more than a 1-hour phone call ever will.

5. A Visit Helps Everyone Manage Expectations

Most conflicts between families and care homes happen because:

❌ the family never visited

❌ expectations were never aligned

❌ assumptions were made

❌ the routine was misunderstood

A tour ensures:

✔ you understand the environment

✔ you see how care is delivered

✔ you know what we can and cannot do

✔ you understand visiting policies

✔ you know why certain rules exist

When expectations are aligned,

care becomes smoother and trust becomes stronger.

6. You Need to Feel Peace in Your Heart

At the end of the day, this is about one thing:

Can you sleep peacefully knowing your parent is here?

A facility visit gives you that answer.

Not Google.

Not photos.

Not WhatsApp messages.

Your heart will know the moment you step in.
