When the Job Doesn’t Fit — And When Families Think Nursing Homes Have No Future

By Wan Salbiah Mior Yahya

Founder & CEO, ZACC MYTOWN (Zara Aisyah Care Centre)

There is a truth many of us in eldercare rarely say out loud —

not because we don’t feel it, but because we are used to carrying disappointments quietly.

It is the truth about employees who don’t fit the job and the truth about families who belittle our industry, calling nursing homes “small companies with no future,” as if eldercare is merely a temporary stop, and not an entire ecosystem that holds our ageing nation together.

I have seen both sides, and I’ve lived the hurt that comes with both.

When an Employee Doesn’t Fit the Position — It Shows

Some people walk into eldercare and rise beautifully. Others walk in, and the job exposes everything they were never prepared for:

  • lack of discipline
  • lack of initiative
  • lack of responsibility
  • lack of pride in their work
  • lack of emotional maturity

And very quickly, the work reveals the truth:

Not everyone is ready for a role where lives depend on you.

When an employee doesn’t fit the position, we see it immediately:

  • Tasks undone
  • Attitude defensive
  • SOP ignored
  • Excuses louder than effort
  • Initiative missing
  • Growth stagnant

And eventually, they blame the environment when the real issue is inside themselves.

Because it is easier to say:

“Company tak bagus.”

“Kerja ni tak ada masa depan.”

“Stress sebab management.”

…than to admit:

“I’m not performing.”

“I’m not growing.”

“I’m avoiding responsibility.”

“This job needs more than I’m willing to give.”

This is the hard truth.

But the harder truth?

Their families often reinforce the narrative.

Behind almost every underperforming staff, there is a family member who says:

“Ala… kerja rumah orang tua je.”

“Small company je, apa sangat masa depan?”

“Patutnya company ikut cara dia, bukan dia ikut SOP.”

“Kenapa tegas sangat? Dia kan baru.”

And suddenly, the child becomes the victim. The employer becomes the villain. And the real issue — the employee’s performance — disappears behind emotional defence.

I’ve watched this many times. I’ve been blamed for it many times. And sometimes, the story reaches the point where:

the family accuses us

instead of guiding their child to grow.

The Stigma: “Nursing Home Has No Future.”

Let me say this clearly:

Eldercare is the future. Ageing is the future. This industry will outgrow many others in the next decade.

But people who look down on nursing homes do not see:

  • the medical, clinical, and rehabilitation skills behind the scenes
  • the management, logistic, and operational systems
  • the leadership opportunities in a fast-growing sector
  • the career pathways we are building
  • the innovation happening in elderly care globally

They only see:

“Tempat jaga orang tua.” What they don’t see is that:

Countries like Japan, Singapore, UK, Australia —

all treat eldercare professionals as frontline professionals, not “small company workers.”

Yet in Malaysia, stigma remains because cultural perception lags behind actual industry growth.

The Irony?

Those who stay and grow in eldercare go much further than those who run away.

I have seen caregivers evolve into:

  • team leaders
  • operation executives
  • care coordinators
  • trainers
  • entrepreneurs
  • managers

Eldercare builds people. Eldercare teaches resilience. Eldercare teaches heart. Eldercare teaches leadership faster than many corporate jobs.

But only if the person is willing to grow.

Because this industry does not reward ego.

It rewards effort. It rewards character. It rewards heart.

When Families Misjudge Our Work — It Hurts, But It Won’t Stop Us

Yes, it hurts when a family belittles the place I built.

Yes, it hurts when parents defend their child instead of helping them improve.

Yes, it hurts when people see ZACC MYTOWN only as a “small centre.”

But hurt is not the end. Hurt is the beginning of understanding.

Because what we are building now — this ecosystem of care, training, professional development, and innovation — is bigger than what most people can see.

Satu hari nanti, the same people who dismissed us will come back and say:

“Rupanya kerja ni ada masa depan…lebih besar dari yang kami sangka.”

I am building ZACC with that future in mind.

If You Don’t Fit the Job, It’s Okay — But Don’t Blame the Industry

Not everyone is meant for eldercare. Not everyone is meant to give their heart to this work. Not everyone is ready for the emotional and physical demands.

But please — don’t mislead your family. Don’t tarnish a field that saves lives.

Don’t blame the industry for your resistance to growth.

If the job is not your fit, that is okay. But growth is still your responsibility.

To the Families Who Look Down on This Work —

One day, you may need us. One day, you may need a caregiver.

One day, you may need a safe place for your parent.

One day, you may understand the weight of what we do every day.

And when that day comes, I hope we will welcome you with the same respect we give to every family who walks through our doors.

To My Team —

Let’s Build a Future the World Cannot Ignore

For those who stay, who grow, who rise, who take responsibility, who learn, who lead…You are the future of eldercare.

You are building an industry many still don’t understand. One day they will.

And when they do, you will stand proudly at the front —because you started before the world saw its value.

Sincerely,

Wan Salbiah Mior Yahya
